Resilience Is About How You Recharge, Not How You Endure

In the first paragraph of the essay, the author depicted a “constant traveler and parent of a 2-year-old” trying to work on air. However, the attempt always fails, the work plan always ends up unfinished

Hence the question emerged: why would this failure happen over and over when there’s not much to interfere? Or, as the text goes, “Why can’t we be tougher, more resilient and determined in our work so we can accomplish all of the goals we set for ourselves?

B) …Based on our current research, we have come to realize that the problem is not in the hectic schedule or the plane travel itself, the problem comes from a misunderstanding of what it means to be resilient and the resulting impact of overworking

The bolded sentence(加粗部分) concluded the answer.

Simplify the sentence, and we have a brief formula:

Misunderstanding → Overworking → Impact.

The following paragraph offered further explanation on how it works:

C) We often take a militaristic tough approach to resilience and determinationlike a Marine pulling himself through the mud, a boxer going one more round, or a football player picking himself up off the ground for one more play. We believe that the longer we tough it out, the tougher we are, and therefore the more successful we will be.

However, this entire conception is scientifically INACCRATE.

The underlined three metaphors are parallel in content; they provide scenarios, vividly explaining previous description “militaristic” and “tough”, saying that we often continue working at an already exhausted and depleted status.

Then, with a comparative-degree set phrase (比较级固定搭配) “the longer…, the tougher…, the more successful… ”, a logic which explains why people push themselves unraveled

This is where the misunderstanding lies — the misunderstanding of what it means to be resilient.

By pointing out its inaccuracy, the author was ready to introduce the problem of overworking this unwise method breeds.

D) The very lack of a recovery period is dramatically holding back our collective ability to be resilient and successful.

Research has found that there is a direct correlation between lack of recovery and increased incidence of health and safety problems.

And lack of recovery — whether by disrupting sleep with thoughts of work or having continuous cognitive arousal by watching our phones — is costing our companies $62 billion a year in lost productivity.

Impacts of overworking:

1. 极大程度地拉低“恢复精力”、“事业腾达”所需的综合能力;

2. 缺乏休息的程度与健康问题、人身安全事故的出现呈正相关;

E) Just because work stops, it doesn’t mean we are recovering. We “stop” work sometimes at 5 PM, but then we spend the night wrestling with solutions to work problemstalking about our work over dinner, and falling asleep thinking about how much work we’ll do tomorrow

To explain the example from the first paragraph, there’s still one question left: why should we feel tired right after boarding the plane? Because, quoting that paragraph,“we race to get all our groundwork done”.

Working at work hours in an office is not the only source of exhaustion. All underlined sentences in paragraph D and E were symptoms of not getting proper rest or recovery

…The scientists cite a definition of “workaholism” as being overly concerned about work, driven by an uncontrollable work motivation, and investing so much time and effort to work that it impairs other important life areas

F) We believe that the number of people who fit that definition includes the majority of American workers. …

Here the author discussed the problem of overworking, as well as how serious and widespread it has become.

H) …Mustering your sources to try hard requires burning energy in order to overcome your currently low arousal level*. This is called up-regulation. It also exacerbates exhaustion.

* A person’s level of arousal is, in effect, how ready he or she is to perform appropriate tasks in a timely and effective manner.

…The more imbalanced we become due to overworking, the more value there is in activities that allow us to return to a state of balance. (That is, )The value of a recovery period rises in proportion to the amount of work required of us

However, the difficulty of gaining good recovery also rises in proportion to the amount of work required of us.

As the following paragraph goes, “Surely everyone reading this has had times where you lie in bed for hours, unable to fall asleep, because your brain is thinking about work. ”

So how do we do it?

Finally, the answer comes:

J) If you’re trying to build resilience at work, you need adequate internal and external recovery.

Conclusion

Authentic, effective relaxation comes from letting work out of mind; it is, instead of forcing yourself to work, the right way to recovery, and then resilience

Going back to the example at the beginning of the article, the author said with satisfaction:

M) Now, instead of swimming upstream, we relax, sleep, watch movies or listen to music (on the plane), and when we get off the plane, we feel ready to return to the performance zone

Although the author adopted expressions which clearly referred to the most straightforward meaning of work — a job — such as “The misconception of resilience is often bred from an early age…And the bad habits we learn when we’re young only magnify when we hit the workforce”, the idea from the passage is undoubtedly operable and valuable in our studies: letting go for a moment and believing in yourself might be all you need
