Young children learn through their active engagement with rich auditory information in the environment. Across cultures, music and language are two prevalent sources of auditory information surrounding infants and toddlers. Studies have shown relations between music experience and children’s speech perception capacities, but it remains unclear whether and how music and bilingual experience jointly and uniquely shapes young children’s development. The current studies explore relations between toddlers’ music and bilingual experience in the home and their vocabulary, pragmatic, attention, and motor skills. Participants were 106 families with 18- to 30-month-olds. Findings provide preliminary evidence that bilingual children tend to exhibit more sustained attention to social stimuli, whereas monolingual children had stronger English vocabulary, pragmatic, and motor skills. Moreover, home music experience, especially that during toddlerhood, is positively associated with children’s vocabulary, pragmatic, and motor skills.



个人简介:

魏然,清华大学英语语言文学学士,哈佛大学教育学硕士及人类发展与教学哲学博士,现任哈佛大学医学院及波士顿儿童医院认知神经科学实验室博士后研究员。主要研究方向为环境因素对儿童语言习得、语言加工、认知发展及脑发育的影响,以及跨文化、跨语言视角下亲子互动对儿童早期社会化进程的推动。曾获哈佛大学马可·波罗学者,费正清中心研究基金等奖项与科研基金。研究性论文已发表于Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Child Language等国际期刊。
